The book, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, the valuable idea of boundaries. In the book Bruno meets a Jewish boy in an concentration camp named Shmuel. Through out the book Bruno and Shmuel become closer and closer. By the end of the book Shmuel told Bruno his dad was missing and had Bruno come on the other side of the fence with Shmuel. In the book it says "Papa, said Shmuel we can't find him" and later starts conversation about Bruno coming on the other side. When Bruno gets on the other side of the fence he starts to notice the camp isn't what he thought it was. But when they get to the beds they are rushed to take "showers". In the end the shower ends up being where they kill all the Jews with gas, killing Bruno and Shmuel. It has the value of boundaries because when Bruno went under the fence to join the camp is where Bruno passed the boundaries he was told not to do. When he would sit on one side of the fence and Shmuel would sit on the other that was close enough and not "pass the boundaries". It teaches you not to go pass boundaries and leave things the way they are if something is beginning to get risky.

I am reading The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, a book that takes place during the Holocaust. In the book Bruno just met the Jewish boy in the Concentration Camp named Shmuel. They are beginning tot be close friends and Bruno doesn't really understand what's going on why Shmuel is in there. During the time of the Holocaust it affected many things/people and led to many things that are happening today. One thing that is still going on today that was related to the Holocaust is the war between Israel and Palestine. After WWll the Allied powers thought Jews needed a "safe place" after so many dying during the Holocaust. So they took land from Palestine to make Israel, making Palestine very mad. The land they had taken away from Palestine was their cultural land and it made the Palestinians very mad. When they got mad they retaliated and still to this day they are at war over Israel. This event relates to my book because it was the conflict of the Holocaust and if the Holocaust never happened the war between Palestine and Israel most likely wouldn't have happened.
The Holocaust was a very devastating time for everyone. Many innocent lives were lost and families were split apart. The book I chose to read was The Boy In The Striped Pajamas. The book is based on a wealthy family that has to move because his dad is starting a "very special job". When they arrive at their new house Bruno, the main character, notices their house is nothing like their last. Later on Bruno notices many men and kids behind his house in a big area surrounded by a fence. One day Bruno wonders off and meets a little boy and Bruno does't understand why hes on the other side. This book relates to the real life Holocaust because it shows the reader how kids that were not in camps and shows how little they knew about what was happening. " His skin was almost the colour of grey, but not quite like any grey that Bruno had ever seen before". In this part Bruno is learning things about the boy he finds inside the camp that he had never known before. He finds the life of the boy and his name very interesting and different. During this time not only were Jews shoved in Concentration Camps but, WW ll and their "ruler" Hitler.
Introduction Homeless people are one of the biggest problems in the United States and even the world. According to USA Today, there are 610,100 that are homeless and 124,000 of them suffer from a severe mental illness (Jervis, 2014).This problem has caused for issues in in many areas. These people need help to get homes and if we don't provide for them they can get sick and die. The best way that we can help to make an impact in this problem is to volunteer in homeless shelters. This topic is major problem for me and I hate having to think about it. When I see someone sitting somewhere outside with dirty clothes and a dirty bed, realizing that is where they sleep every night just affects me every time. Also there are over 57,000 veterans are homeless each night and these are the people that protect our country. (Quigley, 2014) If you are not having the same effect as me when I see that then you must not care about our community. There is nothing bigger than people in this world and to let other people go through this awful struggle is just terrible. Next we will talk about the the issues of this problem. The Issue In our community homelessness has always been an issue, but it has got more of one over time. In past few years living in Raleigh/Cary has got more expensive and some can't afford it. A couple years ago a house that might have been $300,000 now may be $700,000, depending where it is located. Over time, since the house has gained more value, some taxes that the homeowner has to pay may increase also. To some people these increases in payments may be too much and can cause them to either sell and live in a smaller house or also go homeless. For example, a local home in Raleigh was around $267,923 during the year 2015. In just one year, 2016, the price had nearly doubled at $431,813 and remains the same estimated value in 2017. But, because of the location of the house it is now listed at $699,000. Due to the location the price went up nearly $260,000. You can look at more information at Realtor.com This isn't the only way people to become homeless there many more ways. For example, some people make decisions that may not have been very smart. They could have done something while not thought of the consequences and ended up facing the consequences later on. “In 2005, an estimated 100 million people were homeless world wide. The same year 1.6 billion people lacked adequate housing.” according to Homeless World Cup, 2017. Homelessness can happen to anyone, it's not something people usually plan or they want. It affects everyone in the community in a way. A community is made up of many people. If more and more people are becoming homeless the almost everything will become more dirty and a more poverty community. Being homeless can cause many diseases and when they have these diseases they most likely go to the hospital. As more and more people become homeless that's more and more people that hospitals have to take care of. As more and hospitals become filled with homeless people that's less hospital care for us. Also most of these homeless people can't afford the bills for the care they receive and when they can't pay the money to pay for it comes from other people and their taxes. The Solution There are several organizations specifically dedicated to homelessness. They hold a variety of events dedicated to stopping homelessness. They hold food drives, donations, give homeless people homes, and more. However, there is still a need for help in our community. There are over 4,000 homeless people on the streets. Most people don’t realize that mental disorders keep thousands of people homeless on the streets. There are organizations that reach out to homeless individuals through street outreach. Then, they provide assistance such as providing a monthly rent to supportive housing so people with disabilities can have proper support. Nearly one million people have been helped because of organizations who prevent homelessness. Conclusion In the community there are many things we can do to help. One major thing we could do is volunteer in homeless shelters. In these shelters you supply the homeless with food and the other things that they need to live but can't afford. Some shelters that are close are Helen Wright Center, Warren House, and Raleigh Rescue Mission. All these shelters supply the proper shelter and needs that homeless people need. Helping these people that can barely afford to live and have nowhere to call home is very important. It allows everyone to have a chance of at least living a somewhat normal life. In order for us to do this activity, we would have to know the steady supply of food for the homeless shelter. We can organize times to give the homeless food and their resting times. We could collect donations by holding food drives at the shelters and then provide food for the homeless. If we can achieve these goals for the homeless people than we can make a big difference in their lives. When we supply these homeless people with the proper shelter we can achieve our goals of making others lives better. We may not ever be able to get rid of homelessness for everyone but we can sure make an impact to try and stop it. Other people see me as a risk taker, having integrity and being responsible. I see me as the type of person who likes to be someone who can't stay inside all day and have to be outdoors. In my opinion personality is the actions and things that make up who you are.
Animal abuse has become a problem in our community. Every day more and more animals are being left on the streets to starve. It usually comes from people buying pets and later on not having enough money to support them. We have shelter, but not all get the help they need. I think a good solution to this would be to have "animal cops" on the streets all day. This would have someone on the streets all day, causing more animals in need to be helped. This could lower the numbers of animal abuse largely.
In our community there are many problems, some we can't control. One bigger problem that has grown over the years is the number of homeless people. As you go through parts of downtown you will see many people lying on benches in parks, asking for money, and trying to get food.
These people are most of the time homeless and just trying to make it through the day or week. They could go days with not being able to eat or drink a full meal. Many don't have the money to support themselves or their families. Some might have kids and still have to make sure they are safe and healthy. But, when they ask for help usually people don't do all they can do. I think today people don't know who to trust. You could see someone standing on the side of the road asking for money, when really they may just want it for drugs. There many other options you could choose instead of money. You could go buy and give it to them so they will have something to eat. To help these homeless people we could add gardens downtown for the homeless and can get free food. We could also supply more homeless shelters in spots more populated with homeless people. Also the government could supply some people with small apartments that they can pay off with work. These are just some ways we could start to help more, there are many more. |
